The MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system in Singapore is a rapid transit network that consists of several lines, covering most of the city-state. The MRT network is operated by two main companies: SMRT Corporation and SBS Transit.
Currently, there are six MRT lines in Singapore, as follows:
1, North-South Line (NSL): The NSL is Singapore’s first MRT line and runs from Jurong East to Marina South Pier. The line consists of 28 stations and spans a distance of about 45 km.
2, East-West Line (EWL): The EWL is the second MRT line in Singapore and runs from Pasir Ris to Tuas Link. The line consists of 35 stations and spans a distance of about 57 km.
3, North-East Line (NEL): The NEL is the third MRT line in Singapore and runs from HarbourFront to Punggol. The line consists of 16 stations and spans a distance of about 20 km.
4, Circle Line (CCL): The CCL is Singapore’s fourth MRT line and runs from HarbourFront to Marina Bay. The line consists of 33 stations and spans a distance of about 35 km.
5, Downtown Line (DTL): The DTL is Singapore’s fifth MRT line and runs from Bukit Panjang to Expo. The line consists of 34 stations and spans a distance of about 42 km.
6, Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL): The TEL is Singapore’s newest MRT line and runs from Woodlands North to Sungei Bedok. The line currently consists of 32 stations and spans a distance of about 43 km.
Each station on the MRT network is identified by a unique code, and the stations are generally located close to popular destinations such as tourist attractions, residential areas, and business districts. You can use the MRT network map to plan your journey and figure out which stations you need to get on and off at.
In addition to the MRT network, Singapore also has a comprehensive bus network that covers most areas of the city-state. You can use the same EZ-Link card (a contactless smart card) to pay for both the MRT and bus rides, making it easy to get around Singapore using public transport.
